The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
